Nate Silver examines the Super Bowl

New York Times statistics guru Nate Silver is best known for his political forecasts.

But he's also done some number crunching in advance of today's Super Bowl.

It turns out that the 20 best offensive teams were 10-10 in the NFL championship.

But the teams with the 20 best defensive ratings were 14-6.

This, according to Silver, is a good sign for the San Francisco 49ers, who allowed fewer points per game than the Baltimore Ravens.

The 49ers are also better offensively.

The Ravens excel on special teams—they were the best in the NFL—which, according to Silver, probably isn't enough to carry them to victory.

God bless Mr. Silver's geek-like heart.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistical analyses that produce Pigskin Prognostications.

      Ravens 34, San Fraudcisco 31.
