PETA offers tips for taking protest photos

I've taken photos at quite a few protests during my time as a journalist. So I noticed when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent out an action alert linking to a document containing tips for snapping "effective" photos. PETA's advice:

Close-up and candid shots are better than faraway ones. Photos are more effective when you can see a person’s face and read their emotions. Try to get pictures of people in action and engaging with one another and include something in the background that indicates where people are, such as the name of a fast-food restaurant or an arena. Plan your shots and pay attention to the details. Is there enough light? Are people holding their signs right side up?

While the animal-rights group's tips are aimed at activists, they're suitable for any protest photographer. As for the action alert itself, it informed recipients about a National Anti-Fur Day protest on Saturday (February 9) in Vancouver.
