Eric Clapton pays tribute to Irish guitar hero Gary Moore on upcoming album

It was two years ago yesterday that Irish guitar hero Gary Moore died from a heart attack while on holiday in Spain. A former member of Thin Lizzy, Moore was a stunning player who deserved to be ranked among the world's best.

      Eric Clapton would surely agree.

On his upcoming album Old Sock--scheduled for release March 12--Clapton covers "Still Got the Blues", the title track of the 1990 Moore album that marked his move from hard-rock to electric blues. The Still Got the Blues disc featured guest appearances by George Harrison and blues legends Albert King and Albert Collins, and was Moore's most popular release.

I'm psyched to hear how Slowhand interprets Moore's composition. According to Clapton's website, "Still Got the Blues" is just one of a number of covers on Old Sock.

"The new album is a collection of some of Clapton’s favorite songs spanning from his childhood to present day that highlights his vast appreciation and knowledge of music," reads the online bumph. "From Leadbelly to J.J. Cale; Peter Tosh to George Gershwin; Hank Snow to Gary Moore and Taj Mahal, this record is a celebration of so many who have inspired Clapton’s rich musical life."

Here's a fan-shot clip of Clapton performing "Still Got the Blues" a while back.

It's okay, I guess. But we'll take Moore's own version any day:

Here's my 1984 interview with Moore for anyone else who's still got the blues for him.
