Is it time to make cannabis the official herb of B.C.?

Environmental groups working to protect Pacific salmon and their habitat are no doubt pleased to see their favourite fish on its way to becoming an official symbol of B.C. Calls by the Pacific Salmon Foundation and other groups, as well as the NDP, for the establishment of a provincial fish emblem were satisfied today (February 20), when the B.C. Liberal government introduced legislation to make it happen.

This little bit of good news has me wondering if another effort could use a symbolic boost of its own. In the struggle to end the failure that is marijuana prohibition, the Stop the Violence B.C. coalition has drawn endorsements from high-profile current and former politicians, and the Sensible B.C. campaign is preparing to seek an initiative vote on decriminalization.

As these and other pot legalization groups go about their work, perhaps there's room for a simultaneous push to establish a provincial symbol based on one of our top exports (which is now legal to possess in Washington state, and has medicinal and textile uses). B.C.'s already got a provincial flower, bird, mammal, gemstone, and tree. But it doesn't have an official "herb".
