Businessman Adam Levine generates a frenzy at Shoppers Drug Mart

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine's presence caused hordes of excited young women to line up yesterday outside Shoppers Drug Mart at 2888 Granville Street.

He was at the Vancouver retail outlet to launch his self-titled fragrance. And the first 100 customers who bought the perfume had their photo taken with him.

Tonight, Levine and his bandmates will perform at Rogers Arena.

Those interested in the business side of music will be interested in a recent Hollywood Reporter article, which chronicles how Levine parlayed his musical career into a $35-million-plus annual empire.

He's probably as famous for being a judge on The Voice as he ever was as a singer.

"I think that there was this generation before us that was so hellbent on not selling out that it went too far, and I feel like maybe it's history correcting itself because it's more acceptable now to do a lot of the things that musicians would have been terrified to do 10 years ago," he told the Hollywood Reporter's Lacey Rose shortly before being interviewed about a Kmart apparel line. "I was never that guy that thought it was uncool for a band to be successful. I always thought, 'Wow, wouldn't it be amazing to be able to pay your bills and also be a musician?' It's just nice that being motivated to be successful is not a crime anymore."

I am deeply relieved to know that a "musician" with a $35 million commercial empire (including K-Mart apparel and a fragrance line) is able to "pay his bills". How "amazing" for him.

Funny, "history correcting itself" is his reason for "selling out".

Passed him in the lobby of the hotel I was staying at in Vancouver right before he went to Shoppers Drug Mart at 5 on Friday. Fairmont Pacific Rim. Did a double take. I restrained myself from bothering him. No need to be jealous because he is successful.

True rock stars don't need to have their own brand of perfume.

Wow its either sour grapes or schadenfreude. Typical frikin Vancouver. Dude's successful: get over it. If he fell on his face next week you'd be gloating.

How could Maroon 5 possibly "sell out" when they were a crass, cookie-cutter commercial venture since Day 1?

Adam Levine was wealthy prior to his rock star status.
