Petition seeks state funeral for Stompin' Tom Connors
Canadian music legend Stompin' Tom Connors will be honoured on Wednesday (March 13) with a public memorial, which he actually helped arrange himself. But that's not enough for some of the folk singer's fans.
An online petition calling for a state funeral for Connors has garnered more than 740 signatures. The petition states:
Stompin' Tom Connors is a Canadian icon, a true patriot, and a musical ambassador for our great nation. His contributions to Canadian culture, patriotism, and international goodwill on behalf of Canada are of great significance to Canadians at home and abroad.
As such, he deserves a State Funeral to celebrate his life and his contributions to Canada.
The petition's proponent, Kenneth McGrath, apparently believes that 1,000 signatures will be enough to convince Prime Minister Stephen Harper to give the musician the same treatment as the late NDP leader Jack Layton. Connors died last week at 77.

The idea that he would have wanted a "state funeral" is absolutely ridiculous and contrary to his heart and soul.
With all due respect, i would support a state funeral for Stompin Tom Connors, followed by a private service where Tom could be laid to rest.
Tom sang about one thing and one thing only; Canada. Fans all across Canada want to pay their respects to our Canadian legend and folk music icon. Tom was down to earth solid as a rock man, and he wrote about the average everyday people. I'm an average every day person and I would love to see Tom honoured with a state funeral because he was a Canadian who brought himself up and overcame many unforseeable hardships, and never lost being real down to earth, true, honest and solid as a rock.
Until his death, i did not know just how many songs he wrote about Canada, and how much he selflessly gave of himself to us, all Canadians, and Canada, through his music and songs his entire life. He travelled our great country from shore to shore to shore, and wrote about everything he experienced and everybody he met. We love him and want to say Thank You Tom and Rest in Peace.
Stompin Tom Connors was a Canadian Legend and Icon. There are so many tributes and stories about him. This is one I like best to describe what Tom was like: " ...like the greatest tree in the most majestic forest, the thing we don't see is the roots. And that's what Tom was: this country's roots. People under 30, heck, under 40 ,might not have lived at a time when the tree was a bud, a sapling, a single waving leaf. But this tree was pushed into life by Tom's devotion to his remarkable and singular craft. "
Where do i sign the petition?
However, i'm of the opinion and believe that Canada and all Canadians owes the best fare thee well as a last gesture of respect, and heartfelt gratitude for Tom's life's contributions and living legacy through music, to Canada and all Canadians, because there will never be another Stompin' Tom Connors come by our way -- ever again. Tom has provided Canadians with the ultimate gift of Canadian heritage with every song he wrote and sang. As we sing his songs we are reminded of our roots in every way, our fellow Canadians throughout this great land, from shore to shore to shore.
Stompin' Tom Connors was our captain, first mate, and anchor.
Rest In Peace Stompin' Tom Connors.
Tom deserves the best Canada can offer and do for Tom; to show the most respect with a state funeral before Tom's final resting place.
