Alice Cooper project seeks Kickstarter funding

Alice Cooper’s new partner, Dark Matter Publishing, has taken to Kickstarter to raise $200,000 to fund Uncle Alice Presents, a series of 12 horror comics, a graphic novel, and maybe a TV series featuring Cooper as narrator and sometimes character.

Up for grabs for project funders: signed copies of the comics, an “authentic” bust of Cooper, a personalized MP3 message from Cooper, and the coup de gras—a round of golf with the rock god himself, at a course of his choice, for $10,000.

      As the Kickstarter promotion proclaims:

“This is not some hoary tribute to EC Comics. Sure, it’s a comic book anthology horror series, graphic novel, and, if you demand it, a television series, but all comparisons end there. Unlike your mommy’s quaint horror comics of yore, UNCLE ALICE PRESENTS is the one and only horror series brought to you by and featuring the visionary maestro of shock rock himself, ALICE COOPER. That’s right, Alice freakin’ Cooper!”

Shouldn’t that read: “brought to you by you”?

I am all for Kickstarter. I completely support up-and-coming artists and bands using crowdsourcing to gain support to help kick start their careers and projects. Key words here: Kick. Start. I don’t buy that Cooper doesn’t have $200,000 lying around to kickstart his own little vanity project. Even if they approached him. Come on, he can’t reach into his back pocket for the chump change it would take to get this thing going?

I believe crowdsourcing is meant for those who actually need the leg up. Not for publicity stunts, or for millionaire rock stars to get out of making risky investments. It just seems a little greedy.

According to the Kickstarter page, Dark Matter is a “start-up comic, graphic and young adult book publishing company structured to grow intellectual properties.” The owners are Todd Moyer and Tom Sheppard, creator of the Pinky and the Brain series.

The project has currently raised $8,568 from 75 backers. It has 23 days to go in its campaign; if the $200,000 isn’t raised by April 19, Dark Matter won’t get any funding.
