      B.C. loses jobs  Statistics Canada has reported that B.C.'s unemployment rate rose from 6.3 percent to 7 percent between February and March after a loss of 15,000 jobs. The national unemployment rate climbed from 7 percent to 7.2 percent, and Nova Scotia was the only province where the number of employed people went up.

      Rioter not too drunk for conviction  Provincial Court judge Connie Bagnell found Spencer Kirkwood guilty yesterday on Stanley Cup riot–related charges, despite his plea that he was too drunk to be held legally responsible. He hasn't been sentenced yet.

      Canucks shut out Oilers  Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider recorded his fourth shutout of the season as the home-team Canucks defeated the Oilers 4-0 at Rogers Arena.

      Departing U.S. envoy speaks at SFU In a presentation at Simon Fraser University, U.S. ambassador to Canada David Jacobson has rejected an open border between Canada and the U.S. like that of the European Union. The Obama administration recently announced that former Goldman Sachs executive Bruce Heyman will replace Jacobson.

      Canadian jailed in Mauritania  A friend of two Canadian Islamists killed at an Algerian gas plant is reportedly in jail in Mauritania. The government there believes that Aaron Yoon of London, Ontario, has links to terrorist groups in the area.

      North Korea issues new warning  The government led by Kim Jong-un has informed foreign embassies that their safety can't be guaranteed. According to a BBC report, Britain has revealed that North Korea is seeking an answer by April 10 whether its staff will leave.

      Government officials hide assets  The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has revealed that government officials and their families from several countries—including Canada, Russia, Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia, the Philippines, and Azerbaijan—hid money in offshore accounts. They've been exposed in secret records leaked by the consortium to numerous media outlets.

      Daycare shooting  All the kids in a child-care centre in Gatineau, Quebec, are reportedly safe after an adult was shot dead on the premises.

      Rogert Ebert dies  Cinephiles are mourning the death of American movie critic Roger Ebert. He's best known for giving a thumbs up or thumbs down to films, but he's also being remembered for engaging in a colourful war of words with Conrad Black.

      Wesley Snipes freed from jail  TMZ.com has reported that actor Wesley Snipes is under house arrest after being released from prison on April 2. He was in jail for failing to file tax returns.
