KFC to offer boneless chicken

In a sea of chicken nuggets, KFC (formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken) appears worried.

The fast-food chain known for its deep-fried chicken (and neon green coleslaw) announced today (April 5) that they’re going boneless. According to an AP article, KFC will roll out deep-fried boneless chicken pieces starting April 14.

“Younger people don’t tend to be fans of bones—they’ve grown up with nuggets,” KFC spokesman Rick Maynard said in a statement.

KFC’s boneless chicken will launch at 4,500 locations across the U.S. The new pieces will not replace KFC’s popular deep-fried drumsticks, wings, and thighs, but offer an alternative. However the company hinted that chickens bones could eventually vanish from all its menu items—at more than 18,000 international locations—depending on customer feedback and trends.

AP states that the boneless chicken pieces will be offered in white and dark meat, and made from “whole muscle pieces fileted off the bone”. They will be approximately twice the size of KFC’s crispy strips, which are mini chicken breast filets currently on the menu.
