The third-annual Vancouver South African Film Festival takes place at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema in the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 West Hastings) on Saturday to Sunday (April 13 to 14). The festival presents documentary and feature films that highlight the diverse culture, history, and politics in South Africa.

This year, 10 films will be shown, including Material, which tells the story of a South African Muslim family living in the Indian enclave of Forsdburg, Johannesburg; and Little One, a heartbreaking tale of about a six-year-old rape victim left-for-dead near Johannesburg. Other highlights include Reconciliation: Mandela’s Miracle, a documentary about ending decades of apartheid; and Hopeville, an inspiring story about the relationship between a father and son.

Proceeds from film screenings go to Education without Boarders, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational opportunities and facilities to people living in disadvantaged regions of the world. Tickets to individual screenings start at $10. A festival pass, which provides entry to all film screenings, is $60. The screening of Material will be followed by a gala reception featuring South African food. Tickets to the film and gala are $35. Tickets can be purchased online in advance.
