News for Youse: Vaisakhi parade, Grant's law protests, and CBC pressured for tax info

Vaisakhi parade  Vancouver's annual Vaisakhi parade to commemorate the traditional harvest festival in India takes place today in South Vancouver. It will wind from the Ross Street Temple along Southeast Marine Drive and turn up Main Street. It's expected to draw tens of thouands, and possible more than 100,000 people.

Grant's Law protests  There were sit-ins overnight in Vancouver, Victoria, and Nanaimo to push the B.C. government to fully implement "Grant's Law". It calls for two people to work overnight shifts in jobs dealing with the public, and it's named after 24-year-old Grant Depatie. He was killed in a gas and dash incident while working alone at a gas station in Maple Ridge.

Exercise to help battered women The Canadian Women's Foundation will hold the Move for Hope event this morning at 11 o'clock at Robson Square. It's a one-hour workout to raise funds to combat violence against women and support shelters.

Tax collectors want CBC's help  The commissioner of the Canada Revenue Agency, Andrew Treusch, has written a letter to CBC boss Herbert Lacroix asking for data about Canadians who've hidden money offshore. CBC News editor-in-chief Jennifer Maquire has defended the Crown corporation's decision to publish the name of only one of the more than 400 Canadians on a list provided by the International Corsortium of Investigative Journalists.

China and U.S. focus on North Korea  While U.S. secretary of state John Kerry was visiting, China issued a statement declaring that the nuclear issue is a "shared responsibility" of all parties. BBC's China correspondent Damian Grammaticas calls this "a clear signal of China's displeasure with North Korea".

Plane crash in Bali  All 130 passengers survived a Lion Air crash into the sea. The plane missed the runway in Bali.

Canucks prepare for Avalanche  Goalie Cory Schneider has beaten the flu and will start in the net against the last-place Colorado Avalanche. The game in the Mile High City begins at noon Pacific Daylight Time.

Tiger Woods penalized  Golf star Tiger Woods was assessed a two-stroke penalty at the Masters tournament after violating the rules with the placement of his ball. This came after it went into the water.

Glee adds lesbian couple  Eonline has reported that veteran actors Patty Duke and Meredith Baxter will join Glee as a long-time committed lesbian couple.
