Disgraced CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi appeared in a Toronto court today (January 8), bringing the media circus with him.

The former host of Q is now facing three new charges of sexual assault. These relate to alleged incidents in 2002, 2003, and 2008 involving three new female complainants.

That brings the total number of charges to seven for sexual assault and one for overcoming resistance by choking, based on complaints by six women.

The Toronto Star described the scene:

Ahead of his court appearance, Ghomeshi, 47, strode into the College Park courthouse flanked by his lawyers, passing by a group protesting violence against women and demanding more resources, including a 24-hour drop-in centre downtown for women and trans people.

Inside the courtroom Ghomeshi made no eye contact with the media filling the rows of benches behind him, sitting slightly hunched over in his chair, hands tightly clasped together.

Ghomeshi's mother, acting as his surety, was also present in the courtroom.

Defense lawyer Marie Henein told reporters that Ghomeshi will plead not guilty to all the charges.

Ghomeshi's next scheduled court appearance is February 4.

If he gets convicted on multiple charges, I hope he isn't going to get concurrent sentences on them all, meaning he'll serve the same amount of time no matter how many counts he's convicted on, & thus get off lightly despite being a serial offender.

I disagree with much of Harper's Tories' "tough (i.e. dumb) on crime" laws, but one thing I've not liked about our system is concurrent sentences where a violent offender may serve the same sentence whether he's convicted of one assault or ten. Assault once, & the next nine assaults are free! No penalty! This is not justice.

If Jian is convicted on multiple counts, he should be put away for a jail sentence suitably long to reflect his serial offending.

Just another side-show to keep the people from thinking about all the damage all three levels of government have been doing since 2001.

Today federal, municipal and provincial can do what they want and there seems nothing we can do about it. We should be able to lay serious charges against all the people involed in the take-down of BC and Canada SAP.
