Six signs you might be racist (or just a dumped NDP candidate)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Remember Dayleen Van Ryswyk? She's the Kelowna-Mission candidate who was turfed by the B.C. NDP on the first day of the election campaign over hateful comments that party leader Adrian Dix called "unacceptable".

If you thought Van Ryswyk would go through the motions of an apology and disappear from the election spotlight, you'd be mistaken. She's sticking around as an independent candidate. (The NDP has picked Tish Lakes as her replacement.)

According to Global News, Van Ryswyk did apologize in an interview but maintained she was "taken out of context". She also defended herself as making "no such racist comments" and tried her hardest to put a positive spin on what she wrote about First Nations and French Canadians. And apparently, "thousands" of people agree with her views.

So, we've established that Van Ryswyk is totally not racist. But who is?

In her honour, here's six signs you might be racist (or a dumped NDP candidate):

      1. On an Internet forum, you write that First Nations people are given a "free ride" and should "stop dwelling on the past".

      2. You like to use the phrase "we speak english here". You also write: "I'm getting so sick of having french [or another language] stuffed down my throat."

      3. After referring to the "arrogance" of French Canadians, you have the nerve to call them "bigots".

      4. Despite posting the above comments, you write that race "shouldn't matter anymore" and we should all be "one people".

      5. During a TV interview, you defend yourself against questions of racism by claiming you were talking about "equality".

      6. You tell CBC News that you aren't racist because you have family (or friends) from the ethnic group you've maligned.

Somehow I doubt there are "thousands" of people who support her or her views. We'll see how the election goes though, if she wins, it will be a sad day for people in Kelowna.

@ Jerry: Sadly, I think you're seriously wrong. I suspect that there are tens of thousands who support the views of Dayleen the Dim. I have personally encountered hundreds of the uninformed and thoughtless.

We will see though. If I'm right, she will do very well in her riding. If you're right, she won't make a "blip".

I agree that her comments were racist, but I also wonder why I am paying "reparations" through tax dollars to first nations for something that happened when I wasn't alive (I'm only 24). Also, regarding the "french only' street signs in Quebec, but "anything goes" in BC, it just seems like a bit of a double standard to me.

do more research before you complain about your tax dollars going to first Nations... Then complain after if you feel that it still is...or you might have a different view...

@ Brad: You're not paying "reparations" in BC. You're still paying for the fact that our ancestors occupied this land with the government promise that compensation would be paid. Our (your) ancestors failed to live up to their agreements.

It's tempting to argue that such commitments were made long ago, but that is neither legal nor moral. You (we) have inherited land and resources from people who did not acquire them legally. Try to inherit a property from your grandfather and see what happens if the courts decide that he didn't really "own" it. You lose, period ... no matter how much time has passed.

The fundamental problem here is that our ancestors did everything they could to avoid meeting their legal commitments. That might have worked for them, but it sure as hell won't work for us.

The moronic candidate who is the subject of this article doesn't have a clue. She is fundamentally ignorant of the historical facts, and probably stupid as well.

      Nice hair though.

Catering to the so called injustices of the past does not redeem the culturally created guilt of the present generation. We live in a competitive global economy and throwing away tax dollars to special interest groups in Canada just puts us further and further behind in real power. The world has a history of invading other lands and fighting it out for a place to live and resources. Frankly, I think we showed a mercy to the First Nations and French settlers that would never have been reciprocated if we had been the losers. Considering the history of First Nations fighting each other for scarce resources, owning slaves, and what they presently do with the money handed to them by the present gov, we have been magnanimous to the point of idiocy. The French Canadians want to separate and tie up socioeconomic resources with their ridiculous language and cultural laws. This lady is not a racist in my eyes, she is a realist and I sincerely hope she gets elected and represents the common person sick of others being catered to by virtue of their ancestors losing wars for resources and land.

@ Elizabeth King: Like too many others, your opinions are uninformed and based on nothing more than ignorant prejudice that was probably handed down to you.

First, we did not "invade" BC. Our white ancestors came here in peace and willingly agreed to compensate native people for the land and resources we wanted. That agreement was even endorsed by the King of England. There was never any intention - or attempt - to seize this land without compensation. None.

Sadly, successive generations (perhaps your ancestors) decided to cheat and ignore that fundamental commitment. Shame on your ancestors, and shame on you for defending their deceit.

Second, the "mercy" you talk about was shown by the native inhabitants of BC. They chose not to slaughter our ancestors as invaders because they believed (wrongly) that we would keep our word. They were wrong. To this day, they continue to pay for that mistake.

Third, the "French Canadians" (as you call them) do not want to separate from Canada. Although a minority of Quebec Francophones do talk about separation, the majority of French-speaking people in that province do not support separation. More importantly, many Francophones do not even live in Quebec and have no sympathy for Quebec "sovereignty".

Your opinions are uninformed, ugly, and very typical of those who live in western isolation.

I wish there were more politicians who spoke what they really believe. Whether you agree with her comments or not, which I do, at least you know where she stands. Unlike others who make comments and then retract them. If that is your belief then stand up for it! Do you think that people who retract their statements have actually changed their minds? I hope she wins this election. And if this is such a bilingual country, why is English illegal in Quebec. I thought they were still part of Canada.

Well, if there's one thing Idle No More has done (although in my view it's done plenty more) is expose the loathsome white supremacy that's been lurking in Canada...since its establishment, I suppose.

BC is so interesting because it was only colonized 150 years ago. The discussion around treaties and colonization isn't referring to hundreds of years ago - it's 2 generations ago! And yet settlers insist that might makes right and assimilation is the answer to every question regarding cultural practices different from white Anglos.

I wonder if they would feel that way if the government decided to take their house or apartment or land or town and kick them all out so somebody else could live there. Might makes right! It's painfully apparent that the consequences of behaving that way are thoroughly misunderstood by people like the commenters above.

Either you believe in the rule of law or you don't. If you do, please stop whining about honouring treaties. Think about that the next time you sign a contract.
