The Georgia Straight proudly sponsors the 2013 Projecting Change Film Festival

The sixth annual Projecting Change Film Festival opens Wednesday (April 24) at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 West Hastings Street) and runs until Sunday (April 28).

This year, the film fest will include 18 feature-length and short documentaries aimed at inspiring and educating audiences on themes that include environmental sustainability, education, music, agriculture, advertising, and more.

The festival will open with a screening of Kicking It, a 2008 documentary about the 2006 Homeless World Cup, followed by a gala event at the John Fluevog flagship store in Gastown.

Other festival highlights include Edible City, which looks at local communities growing their own food; This Space Available, which questions the difference between advertising and art; Biophilic Design, a film about architecture and design; Bully, a troubling documentary that follows kids who are tormented every day; Mongolian Bling, which looks at the thriving music scene in Ulaanbaatar; and How to Survive a Plague, the story of two groups that changed AIDS from a death sentence to a manageable condition.

The festival’s closing night will feature two screenings followed by a closing gala at Portside Pub. Films include Global Sorority, a documentary celebrating women around the world; and Girl Rising, the story of nine extraordinary girls from nine different countries seeking education. 

Other festival events include a documentary workshop, a one-day urban yoga retreat, and speaker series following most film screenings. Tickets to individual films start at $10 and can be purchased online in advance.
