Photos: UBC unveils $500,000 skate park

The University of British Columbia has officially opened what it’s billing as North America’s first postsecondary skate park.

According to a May 1 media release (that uses the word “radical”), “The UBC Skatepark, made of concrete and galvanized steel, offers a range of jumps, banks and obstacles for riders of various skill levels.”

It continues: “Key park features include an open snake-run bowl, a cantilevered quarterpipe, an angled slappy bank, and stair set, complete with handrail and ledge.”

The park is located on the university's Vancouver campus at the intersection of Thunderbird Boulevard and Health Sciences Mall. It is a joint venture by UBC and the University Neighbourhoods Association and cost roughly $500,000.
