Rob Zombie's remake of Grand Funk's "We're An American Band" can't touch the original

Some tunes are better left untouched.

Like Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band", which was pretty well the ultimate rock tune of 1973.

From the cowbell-heavy opening to Mel Schacher's funky basslines to Mark Farner's wailin' lead solo to singer-drummer Don Brewer's insane Afro, it was the perfect 3-minute blast of wild boys-on-the-loose fun.

Plus, it had that line about staying up all night playing poker with Freddie King.

      You can't really beat that.

But now here comes shock-rocker Rob Zombie, who decides to cover "We're an American Band' on his latest album, Venemous Rat Regeneration Vendor.

I just don't think it's all that amazing. It's not bad, but it's definitely not as amazing as the title Venemous Rat Regeneration Vendor.

Nope. In this case, you just can't touch the Todd Rundgren-produced original. Grand Funk were the American band. Who else would wear jeans while water skiing?

Rob Zombie only lives to shock you. Unfortunately he doesn't live to make music you want to listen to. What was he thinking? American Band can't be touched.

Booze and ladies keep me right...
