Sharks push Canucks to brink of elimination with a 5-2 victory

Vancouver Canucks are on the verge of elimination after a disastrous third period in San Jose.

Three Sharks’ goals over 2:27 sent goalie Cory Schneider to the bench.

He looked particularly weak on the first two goals of the third period, which occurred within nine seconds. The first one by Logan Couture came on a bad angle; the second by Patrick Marleau went through Schneider’s legs.

Roberto Luongo looked solid in goal finishing the game in goal for the Canucks.

Joe Pavelski scored the first two Sharks’ goals and Couture scored the fifth on Schneider on the way to a 5-2 San Jose victory.

In the second period, Alex Burrows beat Sharks goalie Antti Niemi on a nifty cross-ice pass from Henrik Sedin. And after San Jose had put the game away, Dan Hamhuis scored for the Canucks, assisted by Derek Roy.

But for most of the night, the Sharks were stronger, faster, and more in control, outshooting Vancouver 38-30. The Canucks didn’t help themselves by taking eight penalties, compared to just two for the Sharks. San Jose scored three power-play goals.

San Jose has a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final, putting the Canucks in a grim position.

If Vancouver is knocked out by the Sharks, it will mark the second consecutive year that they’ve won the division but exited in the first round of the playoffs.
