Two little assholes damage Phil Lynott's statue in Dublin
If you've been following this blog since it started up back in April of 2010, you know that Ear of Newt holds Irish rocker Phil Lynott in the highest regard. Before he passed away in '86 of a drug-related death he spent 15 years fronting one of the finest and most underrated guitar bands in history: Thin Lizzy.
That's why we're particularly pissed to find out today that last night two disrespectful hooligans pushed over the statue of Lynott that's been standing on the corner of Grafton & Harry Streets in Dublin since August of 2005. The fuckers put a tear in the statue's bronze coat and vest, so it's been taken away for repairs.
Police believe that two men in their 20s did the dirty deed around 4:15 am this morning, Dublin time. One had dark hair and was wearing a white shirt and trousers or jeans. The other had light hair, a heavy build, and was wearing a navy or dark jacket.
If you see either of them hanging around, please kick them in the yarbles for me.
On hearing the news Lynott's mother, Philomena, was not so vengeful.
"I was very upset at first," she told Hot Press, "because the thought that it might have been vandalism made me feel terrible. But it seems now that it was just a bunch of high-spirited boys who meant no harm. So I am not annoyed with them. I'm only hoping that none of the lads got hurt."
UPDATE MAY 10, 2:47 PM: the two little assholes turned themselves in.

With all due, uh, respect... isn't this exactly the sort of irreverent hooliganism that Thin Lizzy glorified in its lyrics?

With all due, uh, respect...only if you want to define a band by its biggest radio hit. Thin Lizzy released 12 studio albums during its career, and there's a lot more to it than "The Boy Are Back in Town".

Who's talking about "The Boys Are Back in Town"? Try these on for size:
"Jailbreak"
"Showdown"
"The Rocker"
"Night Life"
"Having a Good Time"
etc.
Youthful male nihilism is a running theme in Thin Lizzy's songs. (Betcha didn't think I knew so much about yer favourite band, didja?)
