Mother's Day gifts that give back

If you’re still shopping around for a Mother’s Day present, consider picking out a gift that gives back. Two Vancouver-based businesses have launched limited edition collections that arrive just in time for Mother’s Day and are charity-minded.

Homegrown accessories boutique Blue Ruby Jewellery (various locations) has teamed up with Vancouver-based charity Cause We Care Foundation for a special collection of bracelets that helps support single mothers. Five styles of bracelets ($20 to $55) are made from a combination of teak wood beads, turquoise, blue quartz, aquamarine, and moonstone, which look great paired against bright, summer apparel.

All bracelet sales will be donated to Cause We Care, which provides resources such as afterschool care, emergency funding, and workshops to low-income single mothers. Bracelets are available at six Blue Ruby locations, including Pacific Centre, Robson Street, Oakridge Centre, Metropolis at Metrotown, Richmond Centre, and Park Royal until the end of June.

For moms who enjoy perfumes, Escents Aromatherapy (various locations) recently launched a collection of four women’s fragrances ($34.95 for 30 millilitres) that support the Salvation Army’s “The Truth Isn’t Sexy” campaign. According to the Salvation Army, over 250,000 women and children are forced into human trafficking across North America, many of them in Vancouver.

Ten percent of perfume sales will be donated to the Salvation Army, which supports Deborah’s Gate Safe House in Vancouver. The perfumes—Joy, Hope, Grace, and Courage—include pure essential oils and botanical extracts to create a completely natural fragrance.

And if you want to "give back" to a mom who succumbed to cancer - as so many mothers have - contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office and sign up for a "Relay for Life" event (coming soon).

Not difficult, not too strenuous, but rewarding for everyone who joins. It is also the largest CCS fundraiser in Canada.

My daughter took it on, after she lost her mom the summer before last. So far, she has managed to raise thousands, and it fulfills her.
