The 2013 Songfire Festival, which takes place May 30 to June 26, celebrates British composer Benjamin Britten’s centennial with a performance featuring pianist Graham Johnson on June 15 at 8 p.m. at UBC’s Roy Barnett Recital Hall (6361 Memorial Road).

Benjamin Britten is one of England’s most celebrated composers, conductors, and pianists. His works include operas, orchestral symphonies, chamber music, vocal solo pieces, and film music, and he is perhaps best known for his opera Peter Grimes.

Johnson, who authored The Vocal Music of Benjamin Britten, will perform in a program titled Let the Florid Music Praise! The recital will include Britten’s On This Island (on poems by Auden), as well as Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Purcell, and more. Johnson will share the stage with soprano Martha Guth.

Tickets to the concert are $5 to $20 and can be purchased online in advance.
