Community fights to Save Little Nest from closure

Amid the wave of closures of cultural and social spaces that has hit Vancouver (including Zoo Zhop and Rhizome), Little Nest is slated to close its doors in July after facing an astronomical rent hike.

But its fans aren't letting it go without a fight.

Little Nest, a beloved child-friendly eatery just off Commercial Drive on Charles Street, opened its doors in 2007.

The airy, retro-styled room found a devoted following amongst families with its breakfast, lunch, and kids' menus and cakes, with its emphasis on local and organic ingredients.

However, owner Mary Macintyre faced a $2,000 per month rent increase (to $6,500 per month) and has been forced to close.

A Facebook campaign to save the venue, Save Little Nest, was launched on May 24.

Organizers are planning to stage a Little Nest Love-In on Car-Free Day on June 16 from noon to 7 p.m. to show support and appreciation. Volunteers and supplies are needed for the event.

Little Nest is a fine place but reality is that the landlord has no obligation to the business owner and someone else will pay the price asked. One of my favourite coffee shop/restaurants in London recently adopted a "no stroller" policy amid threats of boycotts from parents and is now doing better than ever even with the boycott. If the clientele of Little Nest aren't enough to keep it afloat then it deserves to close. The realities of economics are harsh.
