Rookie Hugh O'Neill booted five field goals—including the game winner from 46 yards out with under two minutes to play—as the B.C. Lions kicked off their 2013 Canadian Football League preseason with a 29-27 victory in Calgary on Friday night.

With veteran kicker Paul McCallum left behind at the Lions' training headquarters in Kamloops, O'Neill was given the opportunity to handle the kicking duties.

He made the most of his opportunity nailing field goals from nine, 19, 37, 46, and 47 yards.

O'Neill has a chance to make the Lions' opening night roster to handle punting and kick-off duties, allowing the 43-year-old McCallum to focus solely on field goals.

Another rookie, Korey Williams, provided the highlight of the night, returning a second-half kickoff 105 yards for a B.C. touchdown.

Quarterback Thomas Demarco threw the Lions only touchdown pass—a 17-yard strike to Nick Moore late in the first quarter. Starter Travis Lulay saw limited duty early in the game, completing two of five passes for 13 yards.

The Lions will play their final preseason game next Friday (June 21) at B.C. Place Stadium against Edmonton.

The Leos open the regular season back in Calgary on June 28.
