Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, February 27 to March 1

      From hockey to burlesque, from roller-derby to opera, from blues to big band, there's a lot going on this weekend in Vancouver. Here's a sampling.

      TONIGHT, FEBRUARY 27

      VIVACIOUS: the Georgia Straight presents Canadian indie-pop band Stars (above) at the Vogue, with local guests Hey Rosetta! Stars--which also plays the Vogue on Saturday--will be performing tunes from new album No One Is Lost.

      VARIED: Kalama Collective and Spectral Arts presents an interactive night of variety performances mixed with ongoing live music and DJ fusion at Studio East.

      VANCOUVER: A panel of experts discusses the City of Vancouver Heritage Action Plan at SFU Woodward's. Panelists will discuss areas in Vancouver which retain distinctive heritage character and explore whether such areas should be considered for Heritage Conservation Area status by the City.

      VISUALLY ARRESTING: Canadian contemporary-dance group Compagne Marie Chouinard (above) performs Gymnopédies and Henri Michaux: Mouvements at the Vancouver Playhouse. The DanceHouse-presented show takes place Saturday as well.

      VIDEO GAMES: two-day conference on Japanese video games at UBC brings together scholars, players, and game-industry representatives for a wide variety of panels and discussions relating to Japanese gaming culture.

      SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28

      JOSH: American acoustic-folk singer-songwriter Joshua Radin (above) plays the Rio Theatre, performing tunes from latest release Wax Wings. Opening act is Andrew Belle.

      JUSTICE: the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom presents Leonora Angeles talking about gendered violence under low-intensity conflict in the Philippines. Lecture takes place at Unitarian Church of Vancouver.

      JAMAICAN: the Georgia Straight presents reggae musician Chronixx and his band Zinc Fence Redemption at the Imperial, with guests Keznamdi and Kelissa.

      JAZZ: Celebrate 40 Years of VCC Music with performances by David Branter, Alan Matheson, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Peter Hannan, Paula Kremer, and François Houle. The Event takes place at the VCC Auditorium on East Broadway, and is followed by a reception next door in the B Building Event Space.

      JOLTING: the Terminal City Rollergirls present a roller-derby scrimmage between Public Frenemy and Faster Pussycat (above) at Surrey's Central City Arena. Tix $5 at the door.

      JUICY: Richard Hallman teaches you how to grow apples, pears, plums, apricots, peaches, figs, and other tree fruit in containers on your balcony or patio. Forum takes place at VanDusen Botanical Gardnens.

      JOHANN: Vancouver Opera presents Johann Strauss, Jr.'s opera Die Fledermaus at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The opera about laughter, love, sweet revenge, and waltzing is a new English adaptation by Bill Richardson, directed by Nancy Hermiston and conducted by Jonathan Darlington.

      SUNDAY, MARCH 1

      SCINTILLATING: California reggae-rock band Rebelution (above) plays the Commodore, with guests Gondwana and Jeremy Loops. Rebelution will be performing tunes from latest album Count Me In.

      SOULFUL: San Francisco blues-soul band Tommy Castro & the Painkillers plays the Electric Owl, with guests the Harpdog Brown Band.

      SEDINS: the Vancouver Canucks take on the St. Louis Blues in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

      SCHIFF: the Vancouver Recital Society presents Hungarian-born classical pianist Sir Andras Schiff (above) in a program of sonatas by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert at Chan Centre.

      SHAKES: Carousel Theatre for Young People presents the premiere of Mike Stack's Shakespearean Rhapsody, an introduction to Shakespeare that shares tales from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and The Tempest.

      SWINGIN' SIXTIES: Viva Vancouver presents a Vegas-style burlesque and variety show at the Biltmore featuring Hot Pants, Miss Fitt (above), Carole Brunette, Burgundy Brixx, the Purrrfessor, and DJ Evilyn 13.
