The edgy, feminist Canadian western TV series Strange Empire has hit the chopping block.

Despite positive reviews, the CBC series won't be renewed for a second season.

The show, starring Cara Gee (Empire of Dirt), Tattiawna Jones, Melissa Farman, and Aaron Poole, was set in 1869 on the Alberta-Montana border. It featured a group of women who struggle to survive after the men are murdered. The series premiered on October 6 and featured a mix of gunslingers and prostitutes as well as Métis and autistic characters.

The CBC did not explain why the series was being cancelled.

Other CBC series which have been cancelled include Arctic Air, Cracked, and Battle of the Blades

Maybe the reason it's being chopped is that it's being hyped as a 'feminist' western? Automatically you're going to lose the attention of most men, since they are genuinely tired of hearing about feminists. Attach the word feminist to anything and the yawning starts.

I have no idea why the CBC might cancel this. Probably lack of money. Probably some Conservative Party quisling decided it was too 'left-wing'. But the fact is, it wasn't that good a series. God knows, I tried to watch it, but the writing was weak and obvious, and the sets distractingly low-budget.
