Jacob Markstrom went from being on waivers to starting in goal for the Canucks

In September, things were looking fairly bleak for goalie Jacob Markstrom when he didn't make the Vancouver Canucks.

Even though he's a highly regarded netminder, Markstrom became the fall guy after the team signed Ryan Miller to a three-year $18-million deal.

Vancouver kept Eddie Lack as Miller's backup and Markstrom was placed on waivers. It was quite the comedown after arriving Vancouver from Florida in the Roberto Luongo deal.

Flashforward less than six months later and Markstrom is scheduled to start in goal for Vancouver.

The 6'6" native of Gavle, Sweden, will be between the pipes tonight against the San Jose Sharks at Rogers Arena.

Head coach Willie Desjardins made the call after Lack allowed 10 goals in his last two outings against St. Louis and Buffalo.

Markstrom, 25, was called up from the Utica Comets last month. This occurred after starting netminder Ryan Miller was injured against the New York Islanders on February 22.

In 26 games in the American Hockey League this year, Markstrom posted a 1.95 goals-against average and a 0.932 save percentage. His record in the minors this year is 17-7-2.
