Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, March 6 to 8

      From the weirdo comedy of Emo Philips (above) to the romantic cello of Ben Goheen, Metro Vancouver has a lot happening in the events department this weekend. Here's a few choices.

      TONIGHT, MARCH 6

      CELTIC: Great Big Sea member Alan Doyle performs at the Vogue Theatre as part of CelticFest Vancouver, featuring songs from latest solo album So Let's Go.

      COMICAL: Emo Philips, described by Jay Leno as "the best joke writer in America," performs standup at at Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club.

      CUBA: launch at Mount Pleasant Community Centre of Nino Pagliccia's book, Cuba Solidarity in Canada—Five Decades of People-to-People Foreign Relations. Pagliccia will make reference to current U.S.-Cuba conversations about starting new diplomatic relations.

      COMPUTERS: Vancouver Web Fest at Performance Works features three days of industry workshops, panels, pitch sessions, screenings from around the world, parties, and an awards gala.

      CHOPIN: the Vancouver Recital Society presents British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor (above) in a performance of works by Chopin, Bach, and Franck at the Vancouver Playhouse.

      SATURDAY, MARCH 7

      BLUES: Canadian blues-rock band Big Sugar, featuring singer-guitarist Gordie Johnston, performs an acoustic show at the Vogue Theatre in support of new release Yardstyle.

      BADASS: a tribute to the Pogues at the Imperial as part of CelticFest Vancouver features performances by C.R. Avery, Dustin Bentall, Pat Chessell, Babe Gurr (above), Rockland Moran, Natalye Vivian, Shane’s Teeth, Vagabonds, the Whiskeydicks, and MC Aaron Chapman.

      BENEFIT: local bands Spoon River, the Wandering Halls, Eric Campbell and the Dirt, and Random Dander play the Rickshaw Theatre in support of the Music Heals Foundation.

      BOB: American rock legend Bob Seger ("Night Moves", "Beautiful Loser") plays Rogers Arena, with local guests Rich Hope and His Evil Doers.

      BARINDER: in honour of International Women's Day, 15 women give eight-minute inspirational talks at Surrey's Chandos Pattison Auditorium. Speakers include Surrey city councillor Barinder Rasode (above).

      BIKES: shop for bicycles and accessories and see the latest trends in cycling at the Vancouver Bike Show, taking place at Vancouver Convention Centre East. Meet the manufacturers from leading brands and get deals from retailers.

      SUNDAY, MARCH 8

      ROCK: Scottish rock band the Twilight Sad (above) plays the Biltmore Cabaret, touring in support of latest release Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave.

      RAP: New York City-based rapper Theophilus London plays Fortune Sound Club, touring in support of latest release Vibes, with guest Father.

      ROGUE: the Rogue Folk Club presents New York-based Brazilian/bluegrass ensemble Matuto at St. James Hall.

      ROMANTIC: in a program titled "Romancing the Cello", cellist Ben Goheen (above) and pianist Bernard Duerksen perform works by Chopin and Brahms at Roedde House.

      REQUIEM: Jonathan Quick directs the Gallery Singers in a performance of Heinrich Biber's Requiem ex F at Canadian Memorial United Church.

      RUNNING: Vancouver premiere screening at the Rio of Transcend (above), a film about a long-distance runner who returns home to help his fellow Kenyans create better lives for themselves.
