      Trudeau promotes pot legalization  On the same day as the Georgia Straight's "weed freedom" cover story hit the streets, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau told a Vancouver audience that he supports legalization and regulation of marijuana. He held a different view last year before seeking the Liberal leadership.

      Earthquake near Port Hardy  The U.S. Geological Survey has revealed that an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred just before 6 a.m. off the northwest tip of Vancouver Island. It was 185 kilometres west of Port Hardy.

      Stanley Park slashing  Police are looking for a 5'5" man in his 20s with dark clothing and a baseball cap after a 33-year-old man was slashed in the neck with a knife. The victim's wounds are not life-threatening.

      Reconciliation Week activities announced  Truth and Reconciliaion Commission chair Justice Murray Sinclair, residential-school survivor Chief Robert Joseph, and Mayor Gregor Robertson outlined a series of events that will take place during Reconciliation Week in Vancouver between September 16 and 22. 

      UBC child-care hikes  The managing director of UBC student housing and hospitality services, Andrew Parr, has said that a five percent hike in childcare fees will not be reversed. According to CUPE Local 2278, this comes after 10 percent increases in each of the two previous years.

      Summer session ends  The B.C. Liberals have passed the 2013–14 budget, ending the legislature's summer session.

      Verizon bid opposed  BCE Inc. CEO George Cope has claimed that rural residents' phone bills will rise if U.S.-based telecommunications giant Verizon is given approval to buy Wind Mobile and Mobilicity.

      Morsi linked to Hamas  The BBC has reported that ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi is being questioned in connection with plotting with Hamas to storm police stations and attack jails during the 2011 revolution. Hamas has rejected the claim.

      Dave Nonis contract extended  The Toronto Maple Leafs have tacked five years onto general manager Dave Nonis's contract. The former Canucks general manager joined the Leafs in December 2008.

      Taiwanese star coming  The organizers of Telus TaiwanFest announced yesterday that Taiwanese singing sensation Princess Balenge (a.k.a. Rachel Liang) will headline the annual cultural festival, which takes place on the Labour Day weekend in Vancouver.
