With Vancouver's rising connections with South Korea, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that one of the city's more popular Korean eateries is opening a new location.

As I was walking in the 400 block of Richards Street today, I noticed a new Jang Mo Jib sign above the entrance of a former Chinese restaurant.

The newest Jang Mo Jib hasn't opened yet. As I peered through the window, it looked like there were extensive renovations underway.

The first Jang Mo Jib opened at 1305 Kingsway in 1995, offering kimchi, beef broth, and Korean-style dumplings.

The Kingway restaurant no longer exists. But since then, Jang Mo Jib has expanded its menu significantly and opened restaurants on Robson Street, on Alexandra Road in Richmond, at Metrotown, and along the Barnet Highway in Coquitlam.

There are approximately 70,000 residents of Korean descent in the Lower Mainland. And in recent years, there's been an explosion in the number of Korean restaurants, particularly along Robson Street.

There's also an H Mart supermarket, which was founded by Il Yoen Kwon and specializes in Asian foods.

The newest Jang Mo Jib will be close to several English-language schools, SFU's Harbour Centre campus, and BCIT's downtown campus.
