2015 Fashion Show designer spotlight: Theorem by Rosanna Fung

Taking design details to new heights, Rosanna Fung’s Theorem presents a collection with the bold and street-savvy man in mind.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Fung has always been creatively focused, starting with a love for fashion that came naturally at a young age. Taking inspiration and direction from her high-school teacher Ms. Ho, Fung became intrigued by design and the ability to control the details and look of a final product as its designer.

Fung’s love of design, as well as her circle of friends and creatives alike, gave her the push to create Theorem. Gone are the traditional cuts and monotonous fabrics seen all over this city—Fung blends avant-garde with streetwear that is both wearable and comfortable. The line targets men that share her love for creativity and who want a way to express confidence and open-mindedness.

      Sei Campbell: Describe your collection.

Rosanna Fung: Theorem is a luxury menswear brand infused with the best of creative streetwear. It’s a luxe line of art-infused clothing that expresses creativity without compromising quality. It aims to stand out using gold-exposed metal zippers and Illustrator-generated custom vinyl artwork. Theorem has guys stepping slightly out of their comfort zone, but the dope details and fit will win them over.

SC: From where did you draw your inspiration?

RF: As I did my research on the streetwear industry, I noticed that there wasn’t any clothing that was well-constructed, with a casual laid-back look, available at a decent price. It’s hard to find fresh, creative clothing that is not only comfortable but has uncompromising quality. I decided to fill this gap with Theorem.

SC: Describe your design and creative process.

RF: To begin, I looked at what the current high fashions were and researched what filtered down to mainstream streetwear. More importantly, I always kept an eye out for street fashion to inspire my modern but classic pieces that will last in the wardrobe season after season.

SC: Any big challenges you had to overcome in creating your line?

RF: The biggest challenge was getting quality fabric at an affordable price so that I could create clothes for my target market that remain within a decent price range.

SC: What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned during your time at KPU?

RF: I’ve learned to stay true to what you believe in and remember who you are. Work hard to achieve what you want. The harder you work, the more “luck” you will have.

      SC: Plans after graduation?

RF: I definitely want to get a bit of travelling done to see the fashions in Paris and Shanghai before I dive into the local industry here in Vancouver. I hope to eventually be in the design field for casual technical wear.

SC: If you could see one rapper wearing your line, who would it be?

      RF: A$AP Rocky.

Theorem will be unveiled at the 2015 Fashion Show, presented by Tamoda Apparel, on April 9 at the River Rock Casino. Thirty-eight other lines by KPU fashion design and technology students will also be showcased.
