New energy drink sourced from Fukushima aims to go global

A new energy drink is gearing up for the international market—and will most likely go viral.

Fukushima Water is a new product with water sourced from the Fukushima nuclear power plant site.

As you are probably already aware, in 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit the Fukushima power plant, resulting in a meltdown of three of its reactors.

A company has discovered a new way to make" functional food" from the ongoing disaster. The resulting product is 30 percent more effective than taurine or caffeine. Full of minerals, such as magnesium and calcium, the energy drink also contains an artificially enriched additive: cesium-137.

What's more, it was first tested in Canada and is now headed for a global release.

However, before you get too up in arms about Fukushima Water, what you should also be aware of is that this is actually a fictitious product for an awareness campaign launched by three Berlin art directors.

The online campaign, which includes a fake website and advertisement, is designed to draw attention to the ongoing leakage of contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean, which has taken place over the past few years but has fallen out of international media attention.

Contaminated water has been reported to have been leaking out of the site sometimes on a daily basis.

Even on March 11, the Japan Times reported that an estimated 747 tons of contaminated rainwater leaked from a storage tank area.

The campaign aims to inspire change by highlighting the lack of information being made available to the public by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and the lack of coverage by the media.
