      The Georgia Straight presents American indie-rock band the Cave Singers (above) at the Rickshaw Theatre.

      Tribute to the Canadian jazz legend Fraser MacPherson at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre includes performances by guitarist Oliver Gannon and his trio. Proceeds go to the Fraser MacPherson Jazz Fund.

      Southern-rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, featuring original guitarist Gary Rossington and longtime vocalist Johnny Van Zant, play Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. SOLD OUT.

      Portuguese Fado vocalist Camané plays West Van's Kay Meek Centre.

      As part of the Bright Moments Series, Coastal Jazz presents Canadian-born, New York City-based pianist John Stetch at Pyatt Hall.

      The Rogue Folk Club presents Victoria roots trio the Sweet Lowdown at St. James Hall.

      FORUMS

      Paul Tupper, associate math prof at SFU, provides a skeptical look at some of the surprising claims of the new data science at an SFU Cafe Scientifique event in New West.

      Five practicing artists from hiphop, theatre, cartooning, and the visual and live arts join together for a discussion that opens up the question of the role of the artist-provocateur in contemporary Canada. Event takes place at the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

      COMEDY

      Kyle Bottom’s Comedy Bucket at Hot Art Wet City Gallery sees comedians perform improv based on audience suggestions.

      ARTS ETCETERA

      As part of the VOICE OVER mind Festival at the Western Front, Swedish artist Erik Bünger presents a live lecture and screening and singer Camille Hesketh and artist Petra van der Schoot present their multidisciplinary work.

      T-shirt release and photo show by Mandy-Lyn at Fortune Sound Club includes vinyl sets by Josh Anderson and Vinyl Ritchie.

      DANCE

      As part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival, Japanese butoh group Dairakudakan presents a work by choreographer Akaji Maro at Vancouver Playhouse.

      MUSIC

      The West Coast Symphony and Maestro Bujar Llapaj present a concert at Christ Church Cathedral featuring Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1, with guest soloist Sarah Hagan.

      Conductors Jon Washburn and Kevin Zakresky lead the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Pacifica Singers in a performance of music by Britten, Brahms, Whitacre, Berkey, Allegri, Vaughan Williams, Washburn, and Chatman. Event takes place at Ryerson United Church.
       

      THEATRE

      Ghost Light Projects presents Eugene Ionesco's Exit the King, a comedy about a kingdom that's been trapped in Purgatory for 400 years. Play opens at Performance Works on Granville Island.
       
      The Douglas College departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology present Charles L. Mee's Trojan Women, a play based on the original work of Euripides. Contains mature content. Opens at Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre.
       
      Western Gold Theatre presents J.B. Priestly's Laburnum, a story about a wife who tries to take her boring husband on vacation. Opens at PAL Theatre.
       
      Theatre for Living presents maladjusted, an audience-interactive play created and performed by mental-health patients and caregivers. Opens at Firehall Arts Centre.
