Colourful porches to take over Robson Street this summer

Remember the Urban Reef that took over the 800 block of Robson Street last summer?

This summer, the seasonal pedestrian plaza in downtown Vancouver will be home to a Porch Parade.

That's the name of the jury-selected winning entry in the City of Vancouver's 2015 Robson Redux design-build competition.

Porch Parade was submitted by Chicago-based Design With Company (architects Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer).

      From the city's news release:

The design features a collection of porches that at first appear abstract, but when full of visitors, will be a lively and familiar atmosphere for downtown Vancouver. As of July 1, people can enjoy the simple delight of people watching and connecting from a porch down on 800 Robson Street. It will remain in place until Labour Day.

While Porch Parade was the jury's pick, the people's choice award went to #ICU, an entry by recent UBC grads.

According to the release, that entry called for a "series of seating and windows that project images from one perspective to another, all inspired by the periscope".

Honorable mentions went to the submissions Robson Reclaimed and Greenest Block.

      Chicago architects designed Porch Parade.

Porch Parade beat out 80 other submissions for the top prize.

Its designers get an honorarium and up to $40,000 to cover the costs of creating and tearing down Porch Parade.
