The 24th annual Telus TaiwanFest takes place Saturday to Monday (August 31 to September 2) at the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza (at West Georgia and Howe streets) and along the 600 to 800 blocks of Granville Street. The festival, organized by the Asian Canadian Special Events Association, celebrates the arts, music, food, and culture of Taiwan.

This year’s festival features a number of top Taiwanese stars, including Rachel Liang, who is better known as Princess Balenge. The pop singer will perform a free concert on the TaiwanFest mainstage on Saturday (September 1) at 8 p.m. Other featured performers include the Amis Kakeng Musical Group, Sounds of Hohaiyan, the Tzu Chi Children Choir, the TCCS Folk Dance Club, and harpist Joy Yeh.

Each year, the festival is known for its culinary offerings, and this year, two top Taiwanese chefs will be featured. Hot & Spicy chef Cheng Chung Chen, who is known for his creative handling of hot and spicy ingredients, and Ching Yung Chen, known for his ability to handle large-scale banquets. Along with popular Taiwanese street-food carts, Telus TaiwanFest will also feature a street banquet showcasing unique Taiwanese snacks.

On the arts and culture front, the festival will be bringing master model-ship builder Hung Chuan-Jui to the festival to showcase his detailed Chinese and Roman warships. An exhibit of Bruce Pai’s lantern masks will also be featured.

Popular activities including a live game show, tea lounge, and more round out this free family-friendly festival.
