Vancouver city councillor George Affleck pitches for business on social-media site

Linkedin is popular with up-and-coming professionals and business executives.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Vancouver city councillor George Affleck has created a profile on the social-media site.

It highlights that Affleck is not only an elected official, but also founder and president of Curve Communications Ltd.

Recently, Affleck wrote a blog post on Linkedin offering guidance about buying advertising. Under his byline, it stated "Marketing Executive & City of Vancouver councilllor".

"Need help figuring out which channel is best for your business?" Affleck concluded in the article. "Send us an email here for a free consultation!"

An email link takes readers to the Curve Communications website.

The City of Vancouver has a code of conduct. It states a conflict of interest exists "when an individual is, or could be, influenced, or appear to be influenced, by a personal interest, financial (pecuniary) or otherwise, when carrying out their public duty".

Affleck doesn't appear to be carrying out any public duties on the Linkedin site. He merely mentioned there that he's an elected member of city council. His two other Linkedin blog posts are also business-related. And he hasn't placed a City of Vancouver logo on the social-media site.

But it is a bit odd to see someone with "City of Vancouver Councillor" below his byline so brazenly seeking clients for his private business.

      Hi Charlie,

You make a good point. I work hard at keeping things separate. LinkedIn is a bit tricky because you put your resume in there. I try to only use LinkedIn for business and facebook for politics. I've revised LinkedIn now to make it more clear publicly.

      Thanks

      George

If you consider disclosing that you are a Vancouver Councillor in your resume as borderline ethics..what do you consider concealing secret deals from the public in the face of legal disclosure requirements..?
