HUB Cycling video promotes “yes” vote in transit (and bike lane) referendum

      You might already be tired of videos related to Metro Vancouver's ongoing transit plebiscite.

      Too bad—here's another one.

      It was posted on the weekend by the nonprofit HUB Cycling, one of a ridiculous number of groups pushing for a "yes" win.

      After all, the 0.5-percent sales-tax increase up for a vote would support a 2,700-kilometre expansion of the region’s bikeways, including 300 kilometres of separated bike routes.

      You have until May 29 to vote "yes" or "no".

      I'm surprised HUB thought publishing this video would have a positive effect on the number of YES voters. It will more likely have the opposite effect (if any effect at all).

      Cycle upgrades are cheap. Why tie the fate of $130 million in cycle upgrades to $4 billion in mass transit and $1 billion for the Patullo bridge?

      Yes we are aware of HUB's position on the referendum: it has been noted many times in these pages. What we haven't seen much discussion of is the role of HUB as useful idiots in providing key 1% supporters of Vision with a private road. The funny thing is we haven't heard much from HUB about the gap in their path near Kits beach, but then again their interests are only promoted when they conincide with Vision and their masters.

      Yes. I support the transit tax. No these kinds of second rate corporate style videos are not convincing. Yes, they are condescending. Yes, they are boorish and earnest. Yes, they are full of uselessly over baked cinematography. No, they don't contribute to the discourse. Yes, the truth hurts.

      Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC), a.k.a. HUB: Your Cycling Connection.
      TransLink has been subsidizing the VACC. So the guys that are promoting the TransLink tax, are also being funded by TransLink.

      I keep coming over from East Van to enjoy this 'private road'. I wonder when I will get kicked off, along with all the other cyclists, joggers, and motorists who continue to use it despite some fabled closure?

      What is this "private road" crap that keeps getting spouted.
      It's far from private, it has actually opened up the road to way more people - pedestrians and cyclists.
      Just because cars can't cut through from MacDonald to Alma doesn't mean it's a great big conspiracy to give Point Grey Road residents a no-car zone.
      And even if it was, what benefit do you really think they get out of it? I'm sure they couldn't hear the road from the massive houses with gated yards. It's now slower getting to their house. Not really any benefits as far as I can see, just a road filled up with bikes and pedestrians safely going about their day.
      Get over yourselves.

      Uh..because 130 million cycle bucks would purchase 260 natural gas fuelled busses( at half a million per bus) and people would actually use the busses in the rain. Cycle stuff...cheap maybe, but ineffective. The road space required ifor bikes is permanently occupied 24 hours a day whether there is a bike on it or not. From what I see, most of the time it's NOT ( being used). Build more cycle stuff when the stuff you already have is crowded with users HUB and Translink. Until then give me a bridge or a roadway and maybe a low emissions natural gas bus.

      Count me in as one who is also completely and utterly offended by the use of the term "private road" to describe the multi-use pathway in Kits. IT IS NOT A PRIVATE ROAD!!!

      You can walk it, bike, scoot, blade, wheel, in fact I bet you'd be left alone if you rode a donkey down the thing. Calling it a private road is essentially saying that anyone who doesn't have a car is not a person.

      Once upon a time humanity was apparently made up of white, straight males with Anglo names, or at least that would be what you'd assume if you flew in from another planet and picked up any book or newspaper or heard a radio broadcast or watched a movie or TV show. Let's call him Bob Smith. Thankfully we are starting to get away from that, though not nearly quickly enough. Well, Bob Smith most definitely drives a car.

      So all y'all who think the planet is named Bob Smith: fuck off.
