Aziz Ansari speaks out about comic stereotyping of South Asians
Comedian Aziz Ansari has sent a signal to fellow comedians that their jokes about Indian convenience-store employees are getting pretty stale.
"There's more Indian dudes doing sitcoms than running Seven-11s," Ansari said at a televised roast of actor and director James Franco, which appeared on Comedy Central. "We are straight up snatching roles from white actors. My last three roles were Randy, Chet, and Tom."
He also commented on the number of gay jokes concerning Franco, who has made LGBT-themed films that appear on the festival circuit.
"Apparently, if you're clean, well-dressed, and mildly cultured, you're super gay now," Ansari said. "Is that why the rest of you guys are so aggressively fat and dirty? You'd think if you read one book and take a shower, dicks are just going to be flying in your face?"
The jokes went over well with the crowd, even though Ansari didn't get nearly as good a review from Georgia Straight comedy writer Guy MacPherson when Ansari visited our city last year.
