On April 12, 7 pm, Brazilian singer, composer, and guitarist Gilberto Gil performs a sold-out show at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC (6265 Crescent).

With this Vancouver appearance, the musician with over 50 albums to his credit will honour the father of bossa nova and his mentor João Gilberto.

Concertgoers can expect to hear some of Gil's original compositions as well as material by musicians Tom Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes, Carlos Lyra, and Caetano Veloso.

Due to his work in political advocacy, Gil was named Minister of Culture to Brazil in 2003, a position he held until 2007. He remains an acting UNESCO Artist for Peace and is also a recipient of the French Legion of Honour.

Gil's life and cultural influence has inspired the documentaries Viramundo and Tropicália.
