Russian LGBT activists and allies thank Vancouver and the world

International efforts by individuals and organizations to protest Russian antigay legislation have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated by Russian queer activists and allies.

In fact, they were so appreciative that the Straight Alliance for LGBT Equality (Альянс гетеросексуалов за равноправие ЛГБТ) organized an acknowledgement action on September 3 to send a big spasibo (thank you) to people around the world who are fighting on their behalf.

Activists in cities ranging from Moscow and Murmansk to Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg took pictures of themselves holding up signs expressing their gratitude.

According to the group's Facebook page, the event in St. Petersburg was met with police who closely monitored their actions and made their attempt to take photos difficult.

Nonetheless, one woman took the time to thank Vancouver (Vancouverties have staged a kiss-in and a protest both at the local Russian Consulate and Mayor Gregor Robertson issued a statement expressing his concerns about the legislation), as shown in the above photo.

Below are a selection of just some of the photos that were taken. More photos can be viewed at the alliance's Facebook page.
