Iconic Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell has been taken to hospital in Los Angeles after paramedics were called to her house earlier this afternoon.

Mitchell, who is 71, was tended to by paramedics after a 911 from her residence in Bel Air. Reports are that the singer was unconscious when the ambulance arrived.

A message on her official Website reads :Joni has been hospitalized. We are awaiting official word on her condition and will post it here as soon as we know."

Mitchell, originally from Fort Macleod, Alberta, who has had a career which spans six decades, released a career-spanning boxed set earlier this year. Although she told Billboard last December that she has a rare skin condition called Morgellons that keeps her from performing, she's been out at industry functions in recent months. This past February, she was spotted at a pre-Grammy party hosted by music biz legend Clive Davis.

A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1997, Mitchell also belongs to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
