Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, April 10 to 12

      From the rowdy metal of Bushwhacker (above) to the refined melodies of Mozart, there's lots going on in Metro Vancouver event-wise this weekend. Here's some choices.

      TONIGHT, APRIL 10

      LOUD: the Invisible Orange presents a heavy-metal battle-of-the-bands at the Rickshaw Theatre, featuring performances by Bushwhacker, Unbeheld, Resurgence, Medevil, and Torrefy.

      LOVELY: Maestro Bramwell Tovey (above) and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra celebrate the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a selection of concerts and pre-event talks at the Orpheum. The VSO Spring Festival runs until April 18.

      LITERARY: local author Holman Wang will take you behind the scenes of Star Wars Epic Yarns, a new all-ages book series. Event at the Richmond Public Library is best suited for families with children 6 years old and up.

      LENNY: tribute to Leonard Cohen (above) at North Van's Centennial Theatre features Glenna Garramone and Oliver Swain, with guests Reid Jamieson, Trent Freeman, and Carolyn Mill.

      SATURDAY, APRIL 11

      PUNKS: the Georgia Straight presents Vancouver Celtic-punk legends the Real McKenzies at the Rickshaw, with guests the Isotopes.

      PUCKS: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena. Puck drops at 7 pm.

      PLANT: all-women Led Zeppelin tribute band Zepparella (above) coheadlines with all-women AC/DC tribute band Hells Belles at the Commodore Ballroom.

      PAT'S: the Georgia Straight presents local all-star AC/DC tribute band Bon Red--featuring current and former members of the Real McKenzies, the Matthew Good Band, Sons of Freedom, and Odds--at Pat's Pub & Brewhouse. Guests are Vancouver rock acts La Chinga and Man the Wolf.

      PAT: help friends and family of Vancouver man Pat Placzek (above) raise money for a life-saving leukemia treatment at the Kegs for Kancer fundraising event!

      PEACE: an afternoon of Latin American music at Robson Square to celebrate peace, sovereignty, and self-determination of the Venezuelan peoples. Event marks the 13th year of the triumph of the Venezuelan people over the U.S.-backed coup d’état.

      PURDY: Tarantino Burlesque at the Rio Theatre pairs music from Quentin Tarantino's films with burlesque inspired by them. Performers include Voodoo Pixie, Sparkle Plenty, Mama Fortuna, Ariel Helvetica (above), and Shameless Lee.

      PARADE: the Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade (above) celebrates Sikh New Year with a parade in South Vancouver that features floats and community groups.

      SUNDAY, APRIL 12

      MOVING: Brazilian folk vocalist-guitarist Gilberto Gil (above) performs at the Chan Shun Concert Hall, featuring the repertoire of João Gilberto. SOLD OUT.

      MIGHTY: under the direction of Christian Findlay, the 19-piece Mighty Fraser Big Band perform selections from the big-band era at Surrey's Northwood United Church.

      MOOG: German pianist Joseph Moog (above) performs pieces by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Fauré and his own arrangement of Anton Rubinstein’s Fantasy on Hungarian Melodies at the Vancouver Playhouse.

      MARKET: third annual Time Travelers' Bazaar at Heritage Hall is a unique market dedicated to eclectic fashion, vintage style, and costumers of all sorts. The range of merchandise carried by vendors includes vintage hats and clothing, jewelry, leatherwork, masks, fabric, and accessories.

      MEN OF LETTERS: guitarist Adrian Verdejo is joined by soprano Catherine Laub in music by Argento, Brahms, Carter, Schubert and Sibelius at Roedde House.
