Lance Armstrong won the 1991 Gastown Grand Prix...long before the scandal brought him down

This week, disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong appears on the cover of the Georgia Straight, thanks to a new film that tracked his downfall.

Film writer Ken Eisner pointed out in his feature story that The Armstrong Lie is one of several documentaries focusing on male ego and lust for power screening at this year's Vancouver International Film Festival.

But 22 years ago, Armstrong was a hero in Vancouver after he pulled off a surprising victory in the 1991 Tour de Gastown cycling race.

If you check out the video above, you can see Armstrong wearing Number 34 as he blasts through the cobblestone streets of our town.

Fast forward to about the one-hour mark and watch him open up his lead against rival Alex Stieda.

Armstrong was only 19 years old at the time—and we'll probably never know if this victory was fuelled by performance-enhancing drugs.

Yeah, but if I was required to wager a year's wages, I know which way I'd be leaning.
