Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, April 17 to 19

      From the psychedelic trance stylings of Infected Mushroom to the swaggering guitar-rock of Def Leppard, there's plenty going on in Vancouver this weekend. Here's a few events for your perusal.

      TONIGHT, APRIL 17

      SHROOMS: Israeli psychedelic trance duo Infected Mushroom plays the Commodore Ballroom, performing material from latest album Friends on Mushrooms.

      SCHNEIDER: the Georgia Straight presents Los Angeles indie-folk band Lord Huron, featuring singer-songwriter Ben Schneider (above), at the Vogue Theatre, with guest Cayucas.

      SACRIFICE: Toronto thrash metal band headlines the Rickshaw at night #1 of the Nothing is Heavy 3 Year Anniversary weekend, with guests Anciients, Black Wizard, Skull Vultures, Neck of the Woods, and Aggression.

      SINGIN' SAFARI: the Vancouver Symphony and Lisa and Linda (above) present a concert of original animal songs, as well as pieces from St. Saens's Carnival of the Animals, at the Vancouver Playhouse.

      SURF: the Speakerphones perform a blend of surf, alt, classic, and indie-rock stylings at the Princeton Pub.

      STICKS: the Vancouver Canucks (above) take on the Calgary Flames in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs at Rogers Arena.

      SATURDAY, APRIL 18

      VIEUX: Coastal Jazz and Caravan World Rhythms present African blues vocalist-guitarist Vieux Farka Touré (above) at Fortune Sound Club.

      VOLUME: eighties British rockers Def Leppard ("Pour Some Sugar on Me", "Photograph") play Rogers Arena, with guests One Bad Son.

      VINYL: celebration of Record Store Day at Neptoon Records (above) features performances by local bands No Sinner, Tough Age, Poor Form, Fashionism, White Ash Falls, Les Chaussettes, Strange Things, Woolworm, Tim the Mute, and the Lazys, plus a meet 'n' greet with rock legend Eric Burdon (above).

      VINYL AT VINYL: celebration of Record Store Day at Vinyl Records features instore performances by K'Immortal, Dawn Pemberton, Tonye Aganaba, Jayson Hoover & Doug Louie, Omar Khan, JPNSGRLS, Abbey Therese, Toni Heuckendorff, Aine, Sarah Jickling, and Threadbare.

      VAISAKHI: annual Surrey Vaisakhi Parade (above) celebrates Vaisakhi Day. Highlights include floats, community groups, live music, and free food from local people and businesses.

      VODKA: B.C. Distilled features spirits from 23 local micro distilleries, food from Forage Restaurant and the Donnelly Group, and a Legacy Liquor Store pop-up retail shop.

      VITAL: author Wade Davis (above) is featured speaker at a fundraising gala for Fraser Riverkeeper at Rosewood Hotel Georgia, where leaders from the worlds of art, business, sport, and entertainment unite in support of a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future.

      SUNDAY, APRIL 19

      SALSA: fourteen-piece Cuban salsa band Charanga Habanera (above), led by David Calzado, plays the Commodore Ballroom.

      SONGS: the Rogue Folk Club presents Canadian folk-blues artist Michael Jerome Browne performing a solo show.

      SYMPHONY: Maestro Bramwell Tovey (above) leads the VSO in a kid-friendly exploration of the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Orpheum.

      SNIPPETS: Colin Preston introduces snippets from the film collection of Vancouver film- and video-scene fixture Bert Bush at Vancity Theatre.

      "SURRENDER": a new solo work created and performed by Amber Funk Barton (above) is featured as part of the Dance Allsorts program at Roundhouse Community Centre.

      SALE: eighth annual NIfty for Fifty sale at Heritage Hall brings together 30 local designers, including Adhesif Clothing, Allison Wonderland, Elroy Apparel, Bronsino, KDON, Bueno Style, and WE3 Designs.
