      From the fiery Mexican-based fusion of Lila Downs (above) to the frenzied surf-punk of Agent Orange, there are plenty of events to choose from in Vancouver this weekend.

      TONIGHT, APRIL 24

      JOLLY: fun-loving Canadian singer-songwriter Mac Demarco (above) performs tunes from latest album Salad Days at the Vogue Theatrewith guests Dinner.

      JOLTING: the family-friendly Electric Vehicle Fair at Science World features the latest technology and a wide variety of electric vehicles and bikes.

      JESTING: Kyle Bottom's Comedy Bucket at Hot Art Wet City Gallery features Improv comedy by Jacob Samuel, Andrew Maclachlan, Fatima Dhowre , James Kennedy, and Damond Tshritter.

      (D)JANGO: the Rogue Folk Club presents a celebration of the local gypsy-jazz scene at St. James Hall, featuring performances by Deanna Knight & the Hot Club of Mars, Christine Tassan et les Imposteures, Van Django (above), Company B Jazz Band, and Les Imposteures.

      JOCELYN & JAMES: a spontaneous composition by Jocelyn Morlock and James Maxwell is part of FUSE: The Noise of Silence at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The evening of art, music, and performance also features The Dream Bird by Conor Wylie, Vancouver-based artist Michael Red and pianist Rachel Iwaasa, dance lessons with Claire French and Kara Nolte, a listening lounge created by Jonny Østrem and Michael Red, and 17th-century Italian music by soprano Camille Hesketh and theorbo player Guzmán Ramos.

      SATURDAY, APRIL 25

      SACKBUTS: musica intima (above) presents an early-music carnival at UBC's Telus Studio Theatre featuring 10 singers, four sackbuts, and a harpsichord.

      SYMPHONIC: Finnish symphonic-metal band Nightwish plays the Orpheum Theatre, with guests Delain.

      SONDHEIM: Vancouver Opera presents Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The story about lethal obsession on the streets of 19th-century London stars bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as Sweeney Todd and mezzo-soprano Luretta Bybee as Mrs. Lovett. Directed by Kim Collier (above).

      STANISLAV: pianist Stanislav Yovanovitch performs works by Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, and Wagner at St. Mark's Anglican Church.

      SYLVAN: the Georgia Straight presents American electropop duo Sylvan Esso (above) at the Commodore Ballroom. SOLD OUT

      SWEDISH: indie-folk singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez performs songs from latest album Vestiges & Claws at the Imperial, with guest Olof Arnalds.

      SPECTACULAR: the 20th anniversary celebration of Keep Vancouver Spectacular at the Vancouver Art Gallery features live music, trash puppetry, gardening 101, larger than life owls, and soccer activities featuring elite FIFA women’s soccer players.

      SUNDAY, APRIL 26

      FRENZIED: SoCal punk/surf power trio Agent Orange (above) plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests In The Whale.

      FIERY: Mexican-American fusion vocalist Lila Downs melds traditional Mexican music with blues, jazz, and rock at the Chan Centre.

      FOOD: the EAT! Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival kicks off Event hosts 15 chefs from across Canada in 35 culinary events, including dinners at select restaurants, hands-on workshops, a hospitality-industry symposium, a three-day event at B.C. Place featuring over 250 exhibitors, and a gala dinner. Participating Canadian chefs include Susur Lee, Mark McEwan, Anna Olson, Ned Bell, Rob Feenie, and Vikram Vij (above).

      FORUM: talk at the Quaker Meeting House by Amoz Gvirtz, a Jewish citizen of Israel and a member of the Negev Coexistence Forum for Civil Equality. Gvirtz will speak about the plight of the Bedouin residents of the "unrecognized villages" of the Negev/Naqab.

      FUNDRAISER: the Daffodil Dash charity run at Creekside Park raises money for cancer awareness, support programs, and research through the Canadian Cancer Society.

      FOR THE EARTH: fifth annual Earth Day Celebration on Commercial Drive is a free, family-friendly event to celebrate the planet. Featuring guest speakers including Audrey Siegl, Tamo Campos, Lynn Quarmby, Joe Foy and Andrea Reimer (above). Live music from Buckman Coe, Luke Wallace and more. Organized by student group Youth For Climate Justice Now, with support from the Wilderness Committee, ForestEthics Advocacy and other environmental groups.
