The Georgia Straight proudly sponsors Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet

      On May 9, 8 pm, Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet play the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6365 Crescent, UBC).

      The pipa master and the chamber ensemble present a collaboration titled A Night in Ancient and New China, which will showcase the great music of China, from its traditional roots to more contemporary expressions.

      Alongside violinists Weigang Li and Yi-Wen Jiang, violist Honggang Li, and cellist Nicholas Tzavaras, Wu Man will perform a suite of Chinese folk songs, arranged by Jiang, in addition to her own solo compositions for pipa.

      The program will also feature Beethoven's String Quartet No. 11 in F Minor, Op. 95 (Serioso) and a chamber version of Tan Dun's Ghost Opera.
