Believe it or not, the POV: UBC Persistence of Vision Film Festival is one of the longer running film fests in the city.

It's celebrating its 25th edition this year as it showcases this year's batch of work from UBC Film Production students.

It offers an opportunity to check out the upcoming talent in the city who may be the future of the local industry.

It's at the Normand Bouchard Memorial Theatre (6138 Student Union Boulevard, UBC) at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (May 1 and 2).

This year's lineup covers subjects as varied as:

      • an Arab boy facing racism in a Canadian small town ("Terrorist")

      • duelling empires in a medieval fantasy ("Elvish Blades")

      • a woman seeking to have her first orgasm ("Big O")

      • a homophobic father fighting his lesbian ex-wife for custody of their son ("Strawman")

      • a Canadian tourist caught in the military invasion of Cuba ("Bay of Pigs")

Tickets can be purchased online ($8.75) or at the door ($10). For more information about this year's festival, including more details about other films, visit the POV Facebook page.
