Sad Scott Weiland performance suggests the joke isn't funny anymore

Scott Weiland has found himself at the centre of more than a couple of disses over the course of his long and troubled career.

The sadly underrated Cop Shoot Cop made a habit of referring to Weiland’s former band as the Stone Temple Toilets. Pavement wrote a snarky ode to the same band in its 1994 indie hit “Range Life”; who among us doesn’t snicker every time we hear the line “Stone Temple Pilots, they’re elegant bachelors/They’re foxy to me are they foxy to you?”

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor described Weiland as a “lazy piece of shit”. Slash—who played with the singer in the ill-fated supergroup Velvet Revolver—has labelled him as someone suffering from “extreme fucking narcissism”.

Weiland’s former bandmates in Stone Temple Pilots haven’t missed him much since giving him the boot and hiring Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington as a replacement a couple of years back. Asked earlier this year about a possible reunion with Weiland, who has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction over the years, STP guitarist Dean DeLeo replied: “Why the fuck would we want that? That fucking mess?”

The Georgia Straight hasn’t been above weighing in on everyone’s favourite former faux-grunger; Weiland inspired a Pop Eye in 2008.

But it’s suddenly looking like everyone needs to stop picking on Scott Weiland. Because if a showcase in Texas yesterday for his new solo record, Blaster, is any indication, saying anything nasty about the rock veteran is like kicking a man in the plums when he’s already down.

Weiland was supposed to be showing the world that he’s back and ready to rock. Instead, he and his backing band the Wildabouts put on a performance reminiscent of SCTV’s famous Perry Como skit. You can see one of the lowlights below.

The singer’s representatives have issued a statement that exhaustion and a couple of ill-timed pre-show drinks were responsible for Weiland’s “performance”. Because, you know, everyone is typically exhausted as they launch a new record.

YouTube viewers haven’t been buying it. A small selection of the comments include: “Adjust your dead pool rankings accordingly”.

And “Was my favorite living front man. No more. From the looks of it, soon to be my second favorite deceased front man”.

And “Fuck’s sake... what happened to him... he claims that he wasn’t on drugs for this performance so I guess we need to be on the lookout for the city bus that ran him over and destroyed his brain?”

Rumours are that Weiland and his Wildabouts are currently adding the Smiths’ “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” to their set.

The original video was made private. I have included two more for you. Which seemed preferable to eating shit and dying.

It's sad to watch, but as someone who has struggled with and subsequently been in active recovery for addiction for several years, I'd say the last thing he needs is any semblance of sympathy. Checking yourself into a rehab or detox is the top layer of snow at the top of the tip of the iceberg. Set-backs happen. The sad truth is, if you're not willing to help yourself, things will not get better.

I have been a fan of Scott Weiland and STP since CORE. I have to say, I find this video disturbing. I have read about the so called 'perfect storm' scenario, where this is nothing more than being tired and a couple of pre-show drinks.

I have never seen anyone display the '1000 yard stare' like Scott does here, over a couple of drinks. As a fan, I am concerned. I don't want this to end up being a tragedy that everyone saw coming, but did nothing to prevent.

The saddest part is that Chester Bennington now sings Scott Weiland's songs better than Scott Weiland does.
