Something epic is going down this week at Ballet B.C.--fitting, when you consider it's putting its own new twist on Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky's monumental The Rite of Spring.

The troupe recently released a sneak preview of the work happening in the studio, seen here, as it prepares for RITE, premiering at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from Thursday through Saturday (May 7 to 9).

Artistic director Emily Molnar is creating one piece on the double bill, riffing on the choreography in the century-old legendary work, but put to the new, synthesizer-haunting strains of Black Mountain's Jeremy Schmidt and set on an atmospheric stage designed by Bocci's Omer Arbel.

Spanish sensation Gustavo Ramirez Sansano is creating the other work on the double bill, a piece set to Stravinsky's explosive, groundbreaking score and set off with a set by his frequent collaborator Luis Crespo.

From our own sneak preview into the studio last week, it's some of the most ambitious, and strangely alluring work the company has mounted. You won't see the artful built worlds in this clip, but it will give you a fleeting taste of some of Molnar's unearthly, almost alien-looking movement and Sansano's sexually charged choreography.
