Two MasterChef Canada cooks from Metro Vancouver make the top five

MasterChef Canada's top five finalists have been revealed and two competitors from the Lower Mainland are in the running.

On the May 3 episode, the final six cooks had to provide dinner service at judge Michael Bonacini's fine dining restaurant Canoe. The cooks were divided into two teams, who had to make four dishes from the menu.

The losing team's three members faced a challenge of making comfort food: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Michael Motamedi's inexperience with fried chicken (he wound up serving a raw chicken leg and flour-heavy gravy) led him to being eliminated.

The remaining five cooks competing for the $100,000 cash prize are:

      • Cody Karey, from Vancouver, B.C.

      • David Jorge, from Surrey, B.C.

      • Christopher Siu, from Markham, Ontario

      • Sabrina Poirier, from Montreal, Quebec

      • Line Pelletier, from Moncton, New Brunswick

The next episode (on May 10 at 7 p.m. on CTV) will see the cooks discovering two, rather than one, mystery box, one of which contains emotional messages from their families. They're in for another surprise when they discover their families are in the kitchen to cheer them on.

Meanwhile, fans of the show will be pleased to know that CTV has confirmed a third season for MasterChef Canada.

Casting for home cooks is now open. The deadline is July 19. An open casting call will be held in Toronto on July 18 and 19 with more details to be announced this summer.

Production will begin in Toronto this fall with the judging panel of Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Caludio Aprile returning.
