      From the sensitive folk-pop of Ed Sheeran (above) to the blackened death-metal of Goatwhore, there's lots going on in Vancouver this weekend.

      FRIDAY, JUNE 19

      BUDDY: Coastal Jazz presents Grammy-winning blues-guitar legend Buddy Guy at the Orpheum Theatre as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      BROTHERS: New York sacred steel group the Campbell Brothers (above) melds African American gospel with electric steel guitars and vocals at Blueshore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts. The group features Chuck Campbell, a National Heritage Fellow and "the Jimi Hendrix and Django Reinhardt of the steel guitar".

      BBD: American hip-hop trio Bel Biv Devoe ("Poison", "Do Me!") plays the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond.

      BOATS: the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival (above) features a blessing ceremony, dragon-boat races, a global tea lounge, a marketplace, retail vendors, a family-friendly area, a beer garden, food vendors, and live entertainment at the World Beat stage.

      BIKES: CycleHack Vancouver event at MakerLabs gathers people with different skills and experiences of transit together to look at cycling in a new way.

      BRAZILIAN: vocalist-guitarist Joyce Moreno (above) performs at the Vogue Theatre with the Tom Keenlyside Brazilian Project as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      BRITISH: 24-year-old folk-pop superstar Ed Sheeran ("The A Team", "Lego House") performs at Rogers Arena, touring in support of latest release x.

      BLACKENED: New Orleans death-metal band Goatwhore (above) plays the Rickshaw, with guests Black Breath, Ringworm, Theories, Skull Vultures, Klandestin.

       

      SATURDAY, JUNE 20

      SCOTTISH: highlights of the annual B.C. Highland Games and Scottish Festival include caber tossing, beer gardens, whisky tasting, haggis, kids' activities, Highland dancing, and pipe bands, including the Vancouver Police Pipe Band and world champions SFU Pipe Band.

      SCANDINAVIAN: the 20th annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival features cultural displays, a Nordic market place and crafters, Scandinavian foods, kids activities, continuous entertainment, a vintage Volvo display, raising of the Midsummer pole, a Midsummer bonfire, and a beer garden.

      SKETCHY: The sixth annual Vancouver Draw Down (above) features over 30 hands-on drawing workshops at which Vancouverites can try their hand at mural drawing, comic jamming, still-life techniques, and blindfold drawing.

      STORY STACK: Instant Theatre Company presents an improv-comedy show based on kids' suggestions at Havana Theatre.

      STEVEN: U.K.-based prog-rock vocalist-guitarist Steven Wilson (above) performs at the Vogue as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      STANHOPE: American stand-up comedian, actor, and author Doug Stanhope (above)--known for his cynical, controversial comedy style--performs at the Rickshaw Theatre.

      SERENITY: charity screening of director Josh Whedon's Serenity (above) includes an evil-laugh contest, a costume contest, live and silent auctions, and door prizes, with proceeds to Equality Now.

       

      SUNDAY, JUNE 21

      FUNNY: evening of comedy and burlesque at the Biltmore Cabaret features April O'Peel, Burgundy Brixx, Chastity Twist, the Purrrfessor, and DJ Evilyn.

      FUSION: Brooklyn-based fusion group Snarky Puppy (above), led by bassist-composer Michael League, plays the Vogue Theatre as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      FRENCH: French jazz pianist Benoit Delbecq (above) performs at Ironworks with François Houle, Gordon Grdina, and Kenton Loewen as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      FUME-FREE: Car Free Day (above) takes place on Main Street and Commercial Drive, featuring live music, kids' activities, and artisan markets.
