Park Board asks for help watering Vancouver's trees during drought

While restrictions on watering lawns are now in effect for Vancouver, did you know that trees are exempt from those rules?

In fact, the Vancouver Park Board is asking the public for help watering trees during the drought that we're experiencing.

In particular, there are 6,000 young street saplings that require deep watering (11 to 19 litres, or three to five gallons) twice a week.

The first two years of a tree are the most essential to ensuring its survival while it is still establishing its root system.

There are five water trucks doing double shifts watering trees. However, they note that it is unusual for them to be doing so this early in summer.

In June, the VPB placed slow-release water bags around the base of 500 newly planted trees.

There are approximately 140,000 trees in the city. An additional 150,000 will be added by 2020.

In addition to the yellow "water me" tags, I strongly suggest putting an extra tag on trees with dates that they need water. People who have watered them can mark/rip that date so we don't waste water watering the same trees twice, three times in the duration.
It's important to save these trees in the most efficient ways during the drought.
